Frequently Asked Questions

There is no difference in product specifications based on colors. Colors can be used for future referencing of specific application goals when viewing pictures of applications.
Tape will adhere to many different coat lengths. Longer hair areas like winter coats or horse feathers, or areas freshly clipped might need special attention before taping. Extra brushing or alcohol prep may be necessary.
Taping will enhance the effects of other modalities such as massage, chiropractic, laser, acupuncture, and acupressure. These benefits will continue throughout the duration of the application.
Fly sprays, lotions, and of grooming products will decrease tape adherence. Alcohol may or micro-fiber cloth can be helpful to remove surface residue and oils. Always rub tape after application to activate adhesive. Horse’s hair can lift tape ends slightly as it recoils against the lie of the hair. An additional anchor may be used to more securely stabilize tape ends. Exposing or storing tape at extreme temperatures may have a negative effect on the tape’s adhesive
Stretch or “tension” is part of the application process, and is specific for the intended application goal. Stretch can be applied with paper-off, mild, moderate, or full tension. The “Less is More” rule of thumb applies when unsure of the amount of stretch to be applied.
It is highly recommended to use Equi-Tape in combination with other modalities, including chiropractic, acupuncture, massage, and laser as it helps prolong and enhance the desired effects of those modalities.
Kinesiology Tape is not designed to be used as a compression bandage as wrapping tightly defeats the purpose of the tape’s ability to decompress the tissue. Equi-Tape aids in supporting joint range of motion through the recoil effect, while decompression allows increased circulation thereby decreasing inflammation. Kinesiology tape supports and stabilizes allowing for full range of motion during movement.
Position horse so as to encourage greatest success from application. Consider stretching muscles when this type of application is warranted. For example: you can lower their head for hay or grass to stretch the back muscles and top line prior to taping, or turn their head away from you in order to stretch the neck.
Removing the sharp corners of the tape helps keep the ends from lifting up. Tip: fold the tape over end to end and cut both ends at one time. This is a great time saver.
Teflon coated scissors help prevent adhesive from collecting on the cutting edge and keeps the edges sharp. Fetlock shears are also very effective as their rounded edge assists in forming a smooth end cut.
Fabric is medication and latex free, and consists of 95% cotton and 5% spandex 2-way stretch with vein-shape wave pattern for better breathability. Extra strength acrylic glue, 160%-180% Stretch Ability, and silk-screen logo allow for better adhesion, performance and look. Equi-Tape is designed for use on horses.

Skin reactions to Equi-Tape are very uncommon due to the benign properties of the tape and the protection given by the hair. If an animal is particularly sensitive it is suggested to test the tape on the animal before performing a complete application. Tape should never be applied over skin irritations, open sores, infected tissue or other conditions prone to irritation.
Taping of all types of animals is encouraged. Hair length is commonly the greatest limiting factor. Trimming the hair length prior to applying the tape can be helpful.
Use of polo wraps, leggings or protective boots are often applied over tape at night or during use or competitions depending on the activity and the rules of the competition committee.
Tape is best stored in a moderate temperature environment. Excessive heat or cold will affect the tape’s ease of use.
It is acceptable, and sometimes preferable, to apply tape to more than one area or condition at a time. However, it is wise to limit excessive taping as each taping application will stimulate its own physiological response, and it can be counterproductive to overload systemic reactions.
The direction of the tape application is defined by the application goal. Muscle assist (athletic training) tapings are applied from muscle origin to insertion. For muscle relaxation or hyper tonicity taping, the tape is applied from the insertion to the origin. These differences are defined by the natural characteristic of the tape’s recoil. Other taping directions are dictated by their specific application goal. Consult with an Equi-Taping™ Practitioner.
Tape is best removed in the direction of the hair growth.
Tape can be applied daily or on an as needed basis based on the assessment and goals/objectives you are seeking. Tape once applied cannot be reused or reapplied.
